A Household in Order | Colossians Series 6
The fountain rises two stories high,
impossibly balanced in the midst
of a simple brick plaza downtown.
It’s sculptor wrought the stone
in billows unfurling like water itself,
sweeps and waves of varied curves
rising up in delicate, frenzied twists.
Through the center column,
around which all the shelves of stone
shoot and glide, the waters hidden
rise, mounting to the fount-head
to tumble again down in tumults
of sun and sky all about
the piecemeal slides and falls.
What seemed disjointed chaos unifies
into a living stonework, receiving
earth’s lifeblood in a beautiful,
choreographed dance.
And who could wish one piece removed,
disjointing all so one might shine?
The fount-head pours forth for all to receive.
The lowest must lift that the highest might drink
and the highest in turn lower down.
